The Life Cycle of a Cult is often characterized by clear stages.

1. The Grand Vision

A dominant personality or figureheads introduce a revolutionary approach that promises a cure for alienated and vulnerable people.

So here we are. They’re getting ready to challenge the establishment overseas. The gunships are circling. Smoke is rising from the out-houses. One individual, vulnerable, nervous, the slogan POSITIVE INTENT displayed prominently as a statement, has come staggering into view and is being led away with discretion to a different team at Derbyshire.

Remember the early days, when the world was still young? The initial phase, of uninhibited aggression.

2. Love-Bombing

Movement founders promise a reboot, a brighter tomorrow, support, redemption together with shared faith in the philosophy.

How did it feel initially? A team united feeling good. Ink. Forearms. Focus. Confident masculinity. Oh sure, The squad will claim they don’t use the label, which is funny as it’s denied, what exactly did I just watch?

However, everyone understands what it is. It’s the batsman attempting a move so outrageous it defies description. It’s the adrenaline of the leader at his peak, a look that says: focused titan, strong features, untamed style, truly contemporary you half-expect to notice and see him playing on the ground bare-chested holding a fish.

It’s Ben Duckett often seen to talk in press conferences, resembling a happy little woodland creature smartly dressed, uttering phrases such as we are actively deconstructing the orange. Indeed, the vibe, initially, was entirely positive.

3. The Growth Phase

Building period. Cohesion maintained through repetition of the cult’s slogans. These beliefs are often illogical to prove commitment.

Does anyone else feel? The criticism, the fury, the disappointment after the first Ashes Test defeat feels overblown, overdone. The performance was poor on the field, as is typical there. 4. Hate Bonding

Before that happens, there are two things worth saying regarding this. In the past, at the start, of optimism and energy, a column appeared labeling it a movement. Conversely, exists the larger scene of the opponent’s mixed deep-seated frustration towards the unconventional visitors, stating, hey, that thing you love and have honed as one way of separating yourself culturally from us, it’s just a joke after all.

This is the core issue. It’s all cults. Bazball was a cult since the sport itself is insular. Or rather, the team has long been exclusive, a circle, a garden party, a closed world with centuries of ceremonial past supporting it. It has long been a place where power and access are hoarded. It’s the British pastime of the British, the original sports washers. And notably, the country is a phenomenon, a structure of hidden ranks, a monarchy still exists.

The players have been sealed up in this environment from a young age. Seeking change, to create a less brutal environment, they are mirroring their upbringing, forming a new circle, a limited community, but now with a modern squad and a coach encouraging individuality provided you conform.

Focus on the moment. Run towards the danger. However much you change, you remain stuck.
